In 3ds Max, click the big button with the 3ds max logo in the top left of the screen, then click Export. If you are a student, you can get a free version at their Student website.įree and open source. I will be using 3ds Max in this tutorial, but the program you use doesn't matter much as the process is mostly the same. I will be using the Source SDK that is provided with Source Filmmaker, but the same principles apply to the regular Source SDK or the Alien Swarm SDK.

You can use the Notepad that comes with Windows, but this one is just way easier to work with. There are a lot more options when it comes to creating models for the Source engine and if you want to get good at it, learning more about how the engine works and working with the tools at your disposal is a good place to start.Īlthough not required, it's a very good text editor. I highly recommend visiting the Valve Developer Wiki to read up on the technical details, if you want to know what you are doing. Some of the concepts and programs in this tutorial are more complex and have a lot more options than described in this tutorial.
